Enriching contacts

Help-center article "Enriching contacts" for Tipoff's demand-gen users, covering the cost-capped enrichment waterfall (free pool first, paid providers only for gaps), bring-your-own-key vs the plan-included tier, and reading provenance/confidence.

When a contact or account lands in Tipoff with holes in it — no industry, no title, no work email — enrichment fills those gaps without you paying to re-fetch data Tipoff already has. It runs a cost-capped waterfall: it checks free sources first, calls paid providers only for what is still missing, and stops the moment the record is complete. Enrichment is metered as Contact enrichment credits, so you always know what a fill cost you.

How the waterfall fills gaps

Providers run in order, cheapest first, and each one is asked only to fill fields that are still blank.

  1. Free shared pool (firmographics). Tipoff first checks what it already knows about the company. Most domains you ask about are already in the pool, so company, industry, size, and LinkedIn come back at no credit cost.
  2. Free classifier. If industry is still missing, Tipoff reads the company homepage and classifies it — again free, and only when there is a gap to fill.
  3. Paid data providers. Person-level fields (name, title, work email, seniority) and any firmographics the free tiers missed come from paid providers. These run only for the missing fields and only while you stay under your cost cap. Once the record has what it needs, the waterfall short-circuits and no further provider is called.

You set a per-contact cost cap; a provider that would push you over it is skipped rather than charged.

Your own key vs the plan-included tier

Every plan includes a paid enrichment tier that Tipoff pays for — nothing to configure. If you already have a data-provider subscription, connect your own key under Integrations. Tipoff uses your key first and falls back to the plan-included tier only when your key returns nothing. Your key is encrypted, scoped to your workspace, and never used by another tenant.

Reading provenance and confidence

Every enrichment is auditable. The result shows filled_by (which source supplied each field) and a tried trail listing each provider's outcome — hit, miss, unavailable (no key), or skipped (cost cap). Filled fields also carry a confidence score (0–1) and a timestamp, so you can weight a homepage-classified industry differently from a provider-verified email before you sync or send.
